Music for the movies
Comments 0 | Recommend 0KINGS MOUNTAIN - Separately, Chris Ferree and Brad Hord play contemporary Native American music and New Age music respectively.
But bring the two Kings Mountain musicians together and you have CutshawKane Reel Music, a duo who provides musical scores for independent films.
"We've known each other for a while and played music together on and off and we're big film buffs," said Hord, explaining how the two got into film scores.
The duo has in their musical stash guitars, keyboards and various world music instruments.
"We've got a full array and we do it all," Hord said.
"We've even used water fountains," Ferree added.
Hord and Ferree will have a booth at the Cleveland County Arts Council's Real to Reel Festival next week. A demo reel with edits from the three movies they have provided music for will be playing and complete soundtracks will be sold. Proceeds from the soundtrack sales will be given to the arts council.
When filmmakers get ready to put music into the film, a copy is sent to CutshawKane. Hord and Ferree watch the film, record the music to CD and send it to the filmmaker, who then lays the music tracks over the film to complete it.
The process for scoring a film varies, Hord said.
"We would like to take two months," he said. "Typically it takes 10 days to two weeks for a 30-minute short."
The music also varies by film and is often "what strikes us," Ferree said.
"The last movie we had a common idea with the director," Hord said.
"Some are specific and some aren't," Ferree said.
CutshawKane's music has been featured on three independent films and the duo expects to provide scores for another four to five by the end of the year.

What's in a name?
Brad Hord and Chris Ferree chose the name CutshawKane for two characters in the film "The Ninth Configuration," which was directed by William Peter Blatty. The film is a favorite of both Hord and Ferree.
