Senior games adds evening schedule
Comments 0 | Recommend 0SHELBY - Senior Games is a year round health awareness and prevention program for seniors age 55 and above, which culminates each April in Cleveland County with a little healthy as well as friendly competition in such sporting events as basketball shooting, golf, badminton, horseshoes, football throw, swimming, fun walk, track and field events, putt-putt, bowling and many more athletic events. Senior athletes enjoy "Fitness for the Fun of It!" through these sporting events and programs.
This year, for the first time, competition for some of the events will be held in the evening hours to give everyone 55 and older a chance to compete.
Senior Games is sponsored locally by the Cleveland County Council on Aging/Senior Center, Gardner-Webb University, Kings Mountain Senior Center, Shelby City Parks and Recreation, Challenger III Amusement Park, Gastonia Parks and Recreation, Humana Inc. and the Dover Family YMCA.
Events are held at The Leona Smith Neal Senior Center, Gardner-Webb, Crest High School, Kings Mountain High School, Challenger III, AMF Gastonia Lanes, Dover YMCA, Pine Grove Golf Course and the Shelby City Park, beginning with the Fun Walk at 8 a.m. Monday, April 14, at Spangler Stadium (Gardner-Webb).
Opening Ceremonies will be held at 9 a.m. at Gardner-Webb University's Spangler Stadium on Monday, April 14.
The guest speaker will be the President of the North Carolina Senior Games Inc., Mr. Brad Allen.
Closing Ceremonies will be held at the Neal Senior Center on Thursday, April 24, at 7 p.m.
The public is invited to attend any of the athletic events as well as Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
Winners in the local events will be eligible to compete in the State Senior Games in Raleigh, Sept. 22-28.
Golf participants must be winners in their age category as well as meet a minimum performance score to be eligible for State Finals.
