Head to the beach this weekend - in Kings Mountain

Saturday will be a day at the beach in Kings Mountain, as the town plays host to its annual BeachBlast event.

The event, in its ninth year, is a tribute to shag and beach music and will feature performances by Crimson Rose, Billy Scott and the Prophets and Ricky Godfried.

And, to enhance the festival's beach feel, tons of sand will be hauled in to form "the biggest sandpile in Cleveland County," according to city special events director Ellis Noell.

There will be plenty of family-friendly activites at the event, including a watermelon-eating contest, water balloon battles, a Teenie Weenie Bikini contest for children six years old and younger, a children's splash area at the new Rotary Splash Pad and the popular giant beach ball release.

The free event is from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Gazebo at Patriots Park on Railroad Avenue in downtown Kings Mountain.
